As we’re heading towards the final confrontation with the Lich King and the end of this chapter of the World of Warcraft saga, we end up reminded of how much of Wrath of the Lich King was designed and never used, or used sparingly, or even resurrected later, fittingly enough. But not only do we have loads of models that either weren’t used at all or were used later in places completely unrelated to where they were supposed to drop, we have entire zones that either didn’t happen at all, or did but which don’t seem to go anywhere.
We’re all familiar with the strange case of Azjol-Nerub. Originally it was intended to be a complete underground zone that players were to level in, do quests, and so on. Then that was scrapped and we instead got two instances and an NPC who was clearly the remnant of a once far more expansive plot. It’s a shame, too, because those two instances are tantalizing hints at how vast and expansive an Azjol-Nerub zone could have been. Frankly, I found (and still find) the Nerubian architecture in those instances far superior to Naxx both in design and its surprising color palette. And when you look around Ahn-Katet and realize how vast the cavern is and how little of it is actually seen in the instance, or run Trial of the Crusader and fall

April rolled around, and so did patch 3.1 and Ulduar — a huge, all-encompassing raid experience that pitted you against Titanic creations and Yogg-Saron, distant cousin of C’thun. Later in the month, a revamped Noblegarden went live to howls of protest from players who found all of their egg spawns camped, and we got some unsettling news that someone was one-shotting Ulduar bosses.
Seriously?
Seriously.

So when was the last time your holiday stocking was covered with Shadowfiends, tree form and daggers? Yeah, we thought so. Neither are ours. Follow the example, then, set by these customized wonders from Arensson of Thorium Brotherhood and her friend Syrellis. “The look on our hubbies’ faces was absolutely priceless when we surprised them,” Arensson reports. “Definitely worth the effort. I have to note that we tried our very best to get a Berserking enchantment on the dagger for the rogue and a +81 Spellpower enchantment on the staff for mine. We had a blast making these stockings and are thinking about doing ones for our alts next year!”
We’ve got more holiday merriment after the break: including a truly epic rendering of the ubiquitous “Night Before Christmas.”
This epic twist on the “Night Before Christmas” pays tribute to members of <Inevitable> of Feathermoon, the guildmates of author Lunarix.

Blizzard has released another round of in-game fixes, this time late last night. The changes are not as epic (or controversial) as the increase in the Battered Hilt drop rate, but they’re still important to note nonetheless.
The changes to Ionar and Tharon’Ja in particular will make killing these bosses much less awkward in today’s pugs. Back when Wrath was released DPS overall was much lower — you’d be happy if you saw a DPS do 1500 on a boss fight. Because most people are so far beyond that, you spend more time running around doing nothing than actually fighting with an encounter like Ionar. Pretty nice changes for those of us chaining a few heroics every day.
The list of this round of changes include:
Ionar, in the Halls of Lightning, will now only disperse once during the course of the fight.
Prophet Tharon’Ja of Drak’Tharon will now only steal your flesh one time during the encounter.
Players with the quest “Wrath of the Lich King” will now properly receive quest credit.
Muradin and Saurfang will no longer gain stacks of Battlefury from totems. Additionally, the duration of Battlefury has also been reduced.
Lord Marrowgar is now tauntable.
The Looking For Group item level requirement for Halls of Reflection has been raised to match the

Winter Veil is one of the more immersive and fun holidays that World of Warcraft offers over the course of the year; it grants you the chance to ride something a little “different,” turn into a snowman with a cute /dance animation, and receive gifts containing noncombat pets if you’ve been good and Coal if Santa RNG thinks you’ve been bad.
Before anyone asks, Winter Veil runs from Tuesday, December 15th to Saturday, January 2nd in 2009/2010, and this is article is about what you’ll need to do in that period to complete the meta (and earn the title) Merrymaker. Unlike November’s holiday, Pilgrim’s Bounty, Merrymaker is required for the yearlong meta What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been, so don’t slack on this one if you want that violet protodrake!
On Metzen!
Saving Metzen for the achievement On Metzen! is a short but fun questline that starts with an NPC in front of the Ironforge bank (if you’re Alliance) with Metzen the Reindeer, or an NPC in front of the Orgrimmar AH (if you’re Horde) with Metzen the Reindeer. The quest ends in either Searing Gorge or Tanaris, whichever is more convenient to you.
Either zone you hit, try to do the Metzen quest first, as you’ll need rewards from it for two of the following achievements.

Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. This season’s combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King.
King Ymiron raised his weary head long enough this week to send Mal’ganis packing, with a 60% to 36% defeat of the dreadlord in the Two Bosses Thunderdome. The spectators seemed somewhat restless (“This would have to be one of the most boring fights to watch,” muttered t0xic. “Sorta like a resto druid duel.”), although we suppose that could have been some pre-patch malaise creeping in.
A conversation in the stands between Nazgûl and Danarok draws attention to a rule we’ve only recently begun clarifying in each fight’s setup: All of the competitors’ abilities, including crowd control and other effects to which bosses are usually immune, work on their opponents. In this case, we think Nazgûl’s gotten it right. In the spirit of the Two Bosses Thunderdome, the king’s undead racial immunities should probably be overlooked … But we could probably be convinced by a strong case to the contrary, presented with confidence in the comments. What do you think?
Nazgûl: “This shall be a fine test, King Ymiron.”
Ymiron begins the

Every Monday Scott Andrews contributes Officers’ Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership.
A few weeks ago I wrote a column about husband/wife guild leaders who were using the old double-roll scam in a new way now that loot doesn’t bind to a character for two hours. I also mentioned in that column the new trend in raids, particularly PUG raids, of offering gold for an item that someone else has fairly won.
This week I received an e-mail from a player feeling guilt for selling an item. I’d like to address his situation first. Then I’ll talk about what you as an officer should consider when this situation arises in your guild.
Dear Scott,
I wasn’t entirely sure who to ask for this, and seeing as how the Officer’s Quarters column you write seems to be the most “Dear Abby” esque that I can find, well, I figured you might be able to help me out.
With the recent implementation of being able to give “mislooted” items to other qualified members of a raid upon a bosses completion, there has obviously been a lot of abuse to this new change. Abuse which, until very recently, I had been abhorrently against. However, I was put into such a situation recently, and well, suffice it to say, I am a bumbling hypocrite.
The story:
